Google Confirms Workspace Leader Is Stepping Down

Google Workspace general manager and vice president, Aparna Pappu, is leaving her position, but not the company, Google confirms to CRN.

Google has confirmed that Workspace leader Aparna Pappu is stepping down as general manager of the tech giant’s communication business after years of leading Google Workspace, which includes flagship products like Gmail, Meet, Docs and Drive.

“After more than six years working on Workspace, Aparna Pappu is ready for her next challenge at Google and will be moving to a new role,” said a Google spokesperson in an email.

In 2020, Pappu became vice president of engineering for Google Workspace, tasked with leading the engineering team across Google’s enterprise, SMB and consumer businesses.

Workspace comprises Google’s communication products like Gmail, Google Meet, Google Chat, Calendar, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, and Groups—many of which have been injected with Google’s AI Gemini technology.

In July 2022, Pappu was appointed general manager and vice president of Google Workspace.

“I’m ready for the next opportunity at Google and stepping down from my current role as GM of Workspace,” Pappu recently wrote in a memo to Workspace employees, according to a report by Business Insider.

The 17-year Google veteran said she’s leaving the Workspace team in good hands.

“That’s really the best feeling of all—when your team has ‘got this,’” she said. “And we’ve especially got this AI thing — we know what we need to do, and we’re razor-focused on execution. … With all that in mind, I knew it was time for something new for me.”

Pappu could not be reached for comment by press time. It is not known yet where she will end up inside of Google.

Who Will Replace Pappu?

Fellow longtime Google executive Jerry Dischler will reportedly take over for Pappu, according to Business Insider.

Dischler has been with Google for nearly two decades.

In February, he was appointed president of cloud applications after 15 years of working inside Google’s ads business.

From 2020 to 2024, Dischler was general manager and vice president of Google’s advertising products.

Pappu’s Google Workspace History

Pappu initially joined Google in 2007 as an engineering manager.

She rose through the Google ranks over the next decade to become vice president of engineering of Google’s collaboration portfolio, now known as Google Workspace, in 2018.

In her memo to employees, Pappu said Workspace is currently “razor-focused” on driving artificial intelligence and GenAI.
